The video below showcases Perry Hall living and documenting the streets of Rome, Italy.
ABOUT ME.
Perry Hall, an American photographer, captures the essence of street life and subcultures in a way that resonates with the raw, often overlooked realities of everyday existence. His photographs, infused with emotional depth, are a direct reflection of human presence, tension, and the unfiltered edges of life.
Perry Hall was born on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, where his early life was filled with unique experiences that shaped his perspective. During his teenage years, he navigated challenges that included time in juvenile detention and living as a hitchhiker. These activities were not just phases; they provided him with a rich understanding of the world that continues to inform his work today. Hall’s journey has instilled in him a sense of openness, urgency, and respect, which he reflects in his photography.
In 2014, a friend gifted Hall a film camera before he embarked on a journey to Rome, Italy. Armed with a suitcase, a skateboard, and a few rolls of film, Hall began to teach himself photography on the streets of Rome. Rome became the foundation for his early work, including long-form projects such as " In the Mouth of the Wolf " and "Street Skateboarding: The Act of Resistance." He also spent time each year in Sardinia, developing slower, more introspective bodies of work. At the same time, he continued to develop projects in the U.S., such as Devil Lived and Sin St., which offer a more visceral and candid portrayal of American street culture, engaging the audience with its rawness and authenticity.
Perry Hall's work has not gone unnoticed. His unique perspective and raw, emotionally charged photographs have earned him multiple international photography awards, and he has worked with brands and magazines. He has also had his work published in prestigious outlets such as The New Yorker. He co-founded Daylight School, a bilingual English-Italian photography school based in Rome, specializing in street and documentary photography. Now based in Texas, he continues to lead workshops and pursue new long-form projects rooted in the same curiosity and clarity that have shaped his practice from the start.
Whether in the streets of Europe or the neighborhoods of America and around the world, Hall photographs with a deep connection to the lives he encounters—always seeking honesty, tension, and the small, unscripted moments that carry weight.
EXHIBITIONS
All Roads Lead To Rome
Arte Borgo Gallery, Rome, Italy, November 2019
"All Roads To Rome" was born from the idea to bring together photographers worldwide, each bringing images of their streets to Rome. From Japan to India to the United States, they passed through Israel, Spain, Italy, and many more. Forty authors and 40 photos were on display. It was a three-day exhibition in the center of Rome, the cradle of Western culture. This was intended to share the different cultures, passions, and styles of authors from other countries.
Flaneur
Book & Job Gallery, San Francisco, California, October 2019
Flaneur is a French word from the old Norse verb "flank," meaning "to wander with no purpose." The Flaneur was, first of all, a literary type from 19th century France, essential to any picture of the streets of Paris. They carried a set of rich associations: "the man of leisure,"“the idler,"“the urban explorer,"“the connoisseur of the street”" and” a gentleman stroller of city street.”" They also have a crucial role in understanding. participating in and portraying the city. A flaneur has played a double role in city life and theory while remaining a detached observer. As street photographers, we can watch obs, erve and frame our environment, capture those millisecond moments in everyday life, and travel. We are obligated to carry on as the modern-da” "Flaneu” (Solo Exhibition)
